Mātua Atawhai Care Services for Mokopuna

What is Mātua Atawhai?

Mātua Atawhai are approved caregivers who provide a safe, nurturing and culturally appropriate environment for mokopuna (children) and taitamariki (youth) who cannot live with their parents or usual caregivers.

This important role supports the oranga (holistic wellbeing) of mokopuna and taitamariki while maintaining connections to their whānau (family) and whakapapa (genealogy).

Mātua Atawhai provide various types of care, depending on the needs and circumstances of mokopuna. Their role is deeply embedded in Ngāpuhi tikanga (customs) and nurtures mokopuna back to a place of enhanced tapu (sacredness) and mana (empowerment).

Reconnection to Whakapapa

Mātua Atawhai are more than just caregivers; they are advocates for mokopuna ora who honour and maintain the mokopuna’s ties to their whakapapa, whānau, hapu and iwi. Ngāpuhi Iwi Social Services provide support for all Mātua Atawhai to fulfil our collective obligations to mokopuna who come to us.
